Verantum
A city built on the bones of three dead empires
Verantum is a city built on the bones of three dead empires. The architecture is grand, the magistrates are polished, and the law is written clearly on the walls of the forum. None of that means the law is followed.
Three old families share the city like three people sharing one bed — never comfortable, never willing to admit it. You are not a firstborn. You are not an heir. You are whatever your family needs you to be when it cannot afford to be seen doing it itself. Tonight, that means finding a killer in the merchant quarter.
You will start alone. You will converge at a crime scene. You will not know each other — but you will have heard each other's names.

The Olympians
Old law, fading empire
Descendants of the original Verantine patrician class. Their ancestors wrote the city's laws, filled its senate, commanded its legions. Three generations of magistrates and generals. They are losing ground — slowly, quietly — and they know it. An Olympian who cannot enter politics becomes something the family pretends not to need: useful, deniable, and kept at arm's length.

The Valkyrian
Earned honour, long grudges
A northern clan that came to Verantum as mercenaries and never left. They earned legitimacy through blood — three generations of service to the city guard and the arena. They are respected by most, fully trusted by none. They respond to disrespect with patience and memory. A Valkyrian who makes the family uncomfortable gets handed a mercenary contract and a quiet farewell.

The Amarati
Ancient knowledge, deliberate mystery
Merchant royalty from the southern desert cities, three generations deep in Verantum's trade networks. They brought gold, spices, and a tradition of contract law that predates the city's founding. They are wealthy and politically invisible — by design. An Amarati sent to Verantum as a "cultural ambassador" is an Amarati the family wanted somewhere else.
